Worry Monsters

Worry monsters are soft toys used to manage anxiety. Children can explore different feelings to help with expressing and understanding different emotions.

They are a visual and tactile tool to separate the feeling of anxiety from the child, making stress easier to communicate and process.

Worry monsters are often used to support a child with autism by:
  • Visual Separation: Children with autism often think in highly visual and literal ways. A worry monster gives abstract feelings, like fear or stress, a concrete physical form. It moves the worry out of the child's mind and onto the toy.
  • Alternative Communication: Many children with autism struggle with verbal communication or alexithymia (the inability to identify and describe emotions). Writing or drawing a problem allows them to express intense feelings without the pressure of a face-to-face conversation.
  • Safe External Storage: A worry monster acts as a physical "box" for intrusive thoughts or obsessions. By using the worry monster, the child can mentally "let go" of the stress. They know the monster is safely storing it until a designated "worry time" with a trusted adult.
  • Parents and teachers often use this tool alongside a set routine. They set a specific time of day (away from bedtime) to use the worry monster. The adult and child then review the worries together to figure out solutions or offer comfort.
